Each year, North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS) partners with the City of Lacey and the Lacey South Sound Chamber on a Compassionate Community project to recognize the importance of treating each other with kindness, respecting differences, and making our district a place where everyone belongs and feels safe.
On October 14, 2025, the NTPS School Board passed a resolution approving the 2025-26 Compassionate Community project: gathering supplies for the NTPS Family & Youth Resource (FYR) Center. The FYR Center offers support and resources to NTPS families and students, and will be moving to its new location on Sleater-Kinney and Martin Way later this school year.
“When we prioritize and model compassion, students notice and embrace it,” said NTPS Superintendent Troy Oliver. “It’s wonderful seeing our staff and students performing acts of compassion throughout our district each year.”

Community members can help ensure the FYR Center is fully stocked by donating:
- New shoes, socks, underwear, and clothing for children and teens
- Soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes
- Full-sized shampoo and conditioner
- Toilet paper and paper towels
“Compassion is a cornerstone of a strong community. By coming together to support students and families through projects like this, we’re not only meeting immediate needs, we’re building a culture of care, dignity, and belonging that benefits everyone in Lacey – it’s people helping people,” said Rick Walk, Lacey City Manager. “Partnering on these Compassionate Community projects is an excellent reminder of what we as a community can accomplish together.”
We encourage schools, businesses, and community organizations to organize at least one activity during the 2025-26 school year! Visit our Compassionate Community page to learn more.
