The boys tennis team from North Thurston High School in Lacey is focusing on team unity this year. The team is made up of 21 athletes with a good mix of upper and lower classmen.
Head coach Travin Feramisco likes how his team is working hard and building a real community-inclusive environment. “One of our strengths this year is the community that we have built within the team, everyone on the team, from the returners to the beginners, have all found ways to bond and become a true team that celebrates one another’s successes and treats each other as equals,” Feramisco noted. “Some of the core things we work on are learning how to take something from each match, whether you win or lose it. We are not concerned about the results. We focus on the improvement that we can find in and out of the season and the results tend to follow those improvements.”
The team has embraced their goal to “fight hard and play smart,” which translates into a focus on using all of the tools they have to play smart tennis. The goal is also that each player embraces the belief to fight hard and adapt when things aren’t going how they expected.
North Thurston competes in the Puget Sound League (PSL). Its varsity squad is built primarily of seniors who have all been on this team since they their freshman year.
Senior Caleb Tenkley holds the singles #1 position and made it to state last year after an amazing run at leagues and districts. Tenkley has only gotten better this year and the team hopes he will do some amazing things during the postseason tournaments held in the spring.
“Caleb exemplifies all of the things we work to bring out in the team. He is a role model for the rest of his team, humble, a friend to everyone on the team, he fights in every match and never gives up, and he is insanely talented at tennis,” remarked Feramisco.
