The girls soccer team from Timberline High School has its sights on district and possibly state playoffs this year. The team has a core group of seniors and is currently in third place in the Nisqually division of the Puget Sound League (6-1-3, 2-1-1 PSL).
Head coach Chris Crowe is focusing on building this year’s team so it meets, and even exceeds, its potential. “One of our strengths this year is our core senior base, and I also think we are very strong from the back moving forward,” Crowe stated. “We have good ball control and I try to really coach that each play the players can ‘win,’ which will lead to equal team wins as a core.”
The Timberline Blazers are currently trailing Lacey rival River Ridge High School (6-2-1, 3-1-0 PSL) and are also behind Peninsula (4-3-1, 3-0-1 PSL) in the standings. The Blazers lost 3-1 in their first meeting with the Seahawks. Timberline travels to play River Ridge on October 7 in a rivalry game that is held at Nisqually Middle School.
Besides the game with River Ridge being a heated rivalry, the game also holds a unique layer in that Timberline senior Isa (Isabel) Liukkonen will be competing against her mom, Kristin Liukkoneun, who is the head coach for River Ridge.
Isa is part of the core senior-led team and is positive on the team’s chemistry this year. “Something that is special about this year’s team is we really have bonded well and besides playing well together, we also just enjoy each other’s company,” Liukkonen stated. “It is really quite a unique experience for some of us, as a few of us have been playing together since fifth grade, and we just really hope we can go further into the post season this year.”
