The North Thurston High School girls basketball team won the third place trophy at the 2025 “Hardwood Classic” this past weekend March 8, 2025. The team competed in the 3A WIAA State tournament at the Tacoma Dome. It is the first time in school history that the program has won a trophy at the state basketball tournament and they finished the year with a record of 29-2.
The lady Rams entered the tournament as the #2 seed and beat #19 Garfield 77-49 to take third place. Garfield was the defending champion from 2024. The team beat Bellevue 63-50 in the Thursday quarterfinal game. North Thurston lost Friday in the state semifinal to #6 Lakeside 40-42 in a close, Friday evening battle.
Head coach Jackie Meyer was excited about how her team finished the tournament after a close disappointing loss to Lakeside. “We went in with a goal to make it to the final game but even though we had a tough loss to Lakeside, I felt we played ‘Ram Basketball’ in our last game and It was exciting to see my team leave it all on the court,” Meyer remarked after the third-place game. “It was an amazing year for our program and we learned to play together and had a lot of offensive threats. The combination of talent made for a historic run and made our school and community proud.”
The 2024-25 team had new additions that helped the core foundation. Shayla and Sierra Cordis and Patricia Egrubay were added to the roster, which already had strong play from seniors Soraya Ogaldez and Grace Lee. The team thrived with very aggressive backcourt defense that allowed them to overwhelm teams and also made for exciting basketball.
The team won the league and district titles and carried a 27-game winning streak. Six seniors graduate along with five of those six who have been in the program for all four years.
