When you think of treatment for vertigo, a condition that makes you feel like you are spinning or tilting, you don’t typically consider physical therapy as a path to recovery. Yet the exercise regimen that Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy provided to patient Lynn Ham is fortunately what the doctor ordered to help control her vertigo. And it’s made a difference.

Vertigo is feeling off balance or dizzy, giving you the false sense that you or your surroundings are spinning. Walking, standing up or moving your head can trigger or worsen the feeling. While vertigo is often caused by inner ear problems, sometimes the origin cannot be found. Ham’s vertigo came on unexpectedly and the cause is unknown. “It came out of the blue,” she says. “For most people, it goes away in a few weeks.” But in a small percentage it does not disappear, and when her vertigo continued, her doctor referred her to Penrose.

“It’s made a huge difference,” she says. “It’s definitely made a difference in my everyday life.” Ham says she can go shopping again, take walks and engage in other daily activities.

Patient With Vertigo Implements Penrose & Associates’ Successful Regimen

Penrose staff established an exercise and movement regimen to help ease her vertigo. “I do a lot of eye exercises, balance exercises and head positioning exercises,” Lam explains. “I follow things with my eyes. I have pages of exercises that I do.”

“I didn’t dislike any of it,” she adds. “All of it is doable.” Ham says she conscientiously follows the Penrose regimen. “I do what they say,” she says. “It made all the difference.” Ham continues to use the regimen when she gets occasional vertigo flareups and the exercises get her back on track.

“They have a great team up there,” Ham says of Penrose staff. “Oh, my gosh, they are amazing.” Ham is particularly thankful for the staff’s consideration of her other physical challenges, like her recent shoulder replacement, in designing a program that cares about the whole person.
