Tumwater Police Chief Jon Weiks has announced his retirement after 37 years working for the Tumwater Police Department.
“After decades of service as a leader in our community, Chief Weiks recently let us know that he intends to retire from the city,” said Mayor Debbie Sullivan. “Words can not express the stability and professionalism that he brought to this role and the deep care he has shown for people here in Tumwater.”
Weiks has served as a patrol officer, general detective, administrative/training officer, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer, major collision investigator, background investigator, acting lieutenant, traffic officer, Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) collision investigation instructor, CJTC regional training coordinator, RADAR/LIDAR instructor, and as a crime prevention specialist.
Weiks was promoted to commander in May 2008, acting chief in February 2017, and then chief of police in May 2017.
He was raised in the Tumwater area and has made friends throughout the city with his focus on community policing and personal engagement.
Deputy Chief Jay Mason will serve as acting police chief starting March 1 as the mayor considers next steps.
