Sports can teach youth many amazing things such as teamwork, discipline, the habit of staying active and more. But learning to play on a competitive team can be tough and often disheartening. That’s why Kidz Love Soccer exists. These youth soccer classes – offered through the City of Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation – will instill in your child a love of the game, not the competition.

Kidz Love Soccer was founded in 1979 by Christ Trevizan, who saw a need. “He noticed a gap in the market for recreational soccer and set out to create a program that focused on fun and learning rather than competition,” shares Chimwemwe Matupa, regional coaching manager for Kidz Love Soccer. “From the beginning, the goal was to provide an inclusive environment where kids of all skill levels could enjoy soccer without the pressure of winning or losing. This approach remains central to the program’s philosophy and sets it apart from other soccer programs.”

Youth Soccer Classes in Olympia Teach the Basics Without the Pressure

Even at a young age, kids can feel the stress of “having to win.” Those whose talent takes longer to develop, or who may need extra help are more likely to quit traditional leagues and teams that focus on competition and winning. Kidz Love Soccer avoids that with a format that encourages children to develop their skills and love for the game in a stress-free environment, explains Matupa. “The program emphasizes fun, fitness, and friendship, creating a welcoming space for kids to grow both as players and individuals,” he adds.

In the youth soccer classes, kids will learn ball control, passing, shooting, juggling and small-sided games. Above and beyond skills though, Matupa says they will learn the important life lessons that come from sports. “Kidz Love Soccer teaches life lessons such as teamwork and problem-solving,” he explains. “Participants learn to work together to ‘solve’ the game they are playing, fostering cooperation and mutual respect. These lessons extend beyond the field, equipping kids with skills they can apply in other areas of life.”

Classes are offered for kids ages 2 to 6. In the 2 to 3.5-year-old classes, a parent or guardian accompanies the child. Classes are held on Saturdays at the Olympia Center Gym. Sessions are in the spring, summer, fall and winter.  Classes are four to eight weeks, depending on the location.

Kidz Love Soccer Is the Perfect Introduction to the Sport

“While the program is designed for recreational play, many participants go on to join competitive teams,” shares Matupa. “According to Trevizan, at least 60% of Kidz Love Soccer alumni advance to play for clubs or at higher levels. The program’s foundation in skill development and enjoyment of the game prepares children for future soccer opportunities, whether they pursue competitive play or continue to play for fun.”

If kids first learn to love the game, without the stress of performing, they are more likely to continue with it, win or lose, in the future. “The program’s commitment to noncompetition, skill development, and life lessons ensures that it remains a beloved option for families looking to introduce their children to the world of soccer,” shares Matupa. “Whether a child dreams of playing on a club team or simply wants to enjoy the game, Kidz Love Soccer provides the perfect starting point.”
