Tatiana Wolfe can’t say enough good things about the Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy help she received in relieving her jaw and neck pain. Her dentist referred her to Penrose to address the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder that was causing discomfort that significantly impacted her ability to eat, drink fluids, relax and enjoy life.

“I really do recommend them to a lot of people,” she says of the Penrose team. “They give a hoot and they take care of you.”

Penrose Patient Sees Relief with Personalized Plan to Address Jaw and Upper Body Pain

Wolfe is a U.S. Army veteran, mother of two children, and works as an administrative assistant at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord. She had been seeing a dentist, who noticed she was grinding her teeth. Over time, pain in her jaw developed and worsened, along with recurrent headaches and loss of motion in her neck. “It got to the point that it was so painful,” Wolfe says. “I couldn’t chew food and would have to stop. I was choking on water and food.”

After several tests and assessments by Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy staff, she received an individualized treatment plan for her TMJ issues. Wolfe began her in-office treatment that included internal and external jaw massages, along with instructions for at-home exercises and stretches. The goal was to relax her jaw. Wolfe says that the team was constantly assessing if the treatment plan was resulting in progress and adjusted it if needed. “The team was so supportive,” Wolfe says. “They wanted to know how I was doing. They really listened and were really empathetic.”

Today, Wolfe no longer needs office visits for her TMJ issues and continues to perform daily in-home exercises to keep her jaw and neck relaxed. She also joined a gym to do other exercises she learned at Penrose, and to sustain and improve upper body strength and plasticity. “I am able to maintain it and stay the course,” Wolfe says of outcome of her treatment plan.
