Every gift tells a story of hope, and every warm coat wraps someone in comfort. Through the Winter Wonders program Community Youth Services is working to ensure that youth and families that need support around safety, stability and belonging, feel the warmth of community this holiday season.
The Need is Growing
In 2023, the Winter Wonders program provided holiday gifts to more than 400 individuals and distributed over 5,000 cold-weather items to those in need. This year, the need has grown by 20%, with even more youth and families counting on our community’s generosity.
“The gifts received often go beyond holiday cheer—they help young adults set up their apartments, create schoolwork spaces, provide new parents with essentials for their newborns, and offer vital items they may not otherwise afford,” explains Sarah Hodge, community engagement manager for Community Youth Services
How You Can Make a Difference
Still, 70 wish lists are waiting to be fulfilled for families, youth, and young adults. You can be the one to make their holiday season unforgettable.
Here’s how to help:
- Select a Wish List: Visit the CYS Winter Wonders webpage to choose an individual or family to support. Follow the instructions and schedule your drop-off by December 16 by contacting Sarah at 360.918.7881 or shodge@communityyouthservices.org.
- Donate Warm Clothing: Many participants face freezing winters without proper gear. Donate new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, and other weather-appropriate clothing. Men’s sizes large to 4XL are especially needed.
- Make a Monetary Gift: Let the experienced CYS staff shop for essential items on your behalf. Donations can be made directly on the CYS website.
- Shop the Amazon Wish List: For added convenience, visit the Winter Wonders Amazon Wish List to purchase and ship gifts directly to CYS.
- Provide Gift Cards: Donate gift cards to help youth purchase food or clothing. Drop off gift cards Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., at 711 State Avenue, Olympia.
The Joy of Giving
Donating to Winter Wonders is more than an act of kindness—it’s a chance to transform lives.
“This program helps families and young adults feel seen and supported,” Sarah shares. “Families often express how cared for they feel, sharing that they feel seen and relieved to be able to give their children presents. Many young adults and youths are excited to receive gifts, as they may not have family nearby to celebrate with. For them, this program offers a chance to experience the holiday traditions they see others enjoying, helping them feel more connected to their peers”.
Act Now to Share Joy and Warmth
The holidays are just around the corner, and every contribution – whether a gift, warm coat, or monetary donation – helps make the season brighter.
Take a moment to bring joy and comfort to someone in need. Together, we can create a holiday season full of warmth, connection, and hope for the youth and families served by Community Youth Services.
