Several Athletes Lead Geoducks in Men’s Wrestling

Several members of The Evergreen State College men’s wrestling team have led the Geoducks during the early season matches in the 2024-25 season. Leaders include Jeramias Sandoval (Jr.), Ronnell Parker-Borrero (Fr.), Malachi Wallway (So.), and Horacio Godinez (Fr.).

Sandoval, who competes in the 141-pound weight class, has been a steady performer for the Geoducks. He was 4-1 at the Simpson Duals, suffering his only loss in overtime. He placed fourth at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University. He won by a pin during his match in a dual meet against Montana State University-Northern. He took third place at the Spokane Open.

At the Mike Clock Open, Sandoval was 4-2 overall, including technical falls by scores of 21-6 and 18-3, plus wins by 6-1 and 7-0 margins. He lost to Tyler Rhue of Southern Oregon University in the third place match, 7-3.

Sandoval began the Spokane Open with a pin of his first round opponent. He won by a 19-3 technical fall in the quarterfinals but lost in the semifinals. He advanced in the consolation bracket with a win by no contest and then defeated Tristan Andrade of Treasure Valley Community College 4-2 in the third place match. Sandoval was 5-1 including the no contest victory.

Parker-Borrero was listed #18 in the nation at 184 pounds by The Open Mat in its NAIA rankings on Nov. 22. He opened the season with a 5-0 record, including three pins, at the Simpson Duals. He was 2-2 at the Mike Clock Open with a pin and a 6-2 win. He lost by close margins of 7-6 to Joseph Breedlove of Simon Fraser University and 6-4 to unattached competitor Ben Gomez.

Wallway picked up two wins during the Simpson Duals including a 16-1 technical fall against his opponent from Simpson University. HIs other win was by forfeit against Westcliff University. He was 3-2 overall at the Mike Clock Open as he took fourth place at 125 pounds. He won by a point, a 9-6 score, and a medical forfeit. At the Spokane Open, he added another 3-2 record with a 12-2 major decision, a 10-5 win over Kanoe Kelly of Southern Oregon, and a win by medical forfeit.

The Geoducks received strong efforts from Godinez at the Simpson Duals, the Mike Clock Open, and the Spokane Open. At Simpson, he registered a 4-1 record in the team’s five dual meets, with his only loss occurring at the buzzer in the third period.

At the Mike Clock Open, he placed fifth at 149 pounds. Godinez started the meet with a pin at 4:46. He lost in the quarterfinals but picked up a 9-0 major decision in the consolation bracket before pinning his next opponent. Godinez lost in the consolation semifinals to McKinley Robbins of Oregon State University.

Godinez earned third place at the Spokane Open. His first two matches at the tournament were a 16-1 win by technical fall and a 14-2 win by major decision. He won by a pin at 4:43 in the quarterfinals but lost to unattached wrestler Izzy Acosta in the semifinals 9-5. Godinez outscored Josiah Johnson of Washington State 10-1 in the third place match.

Evergreen will return to the mats at the Clackamas Open on Sunday, Dec. 8. Action in Oregon City, Oregon, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PST.
