Carol Brown’s history as a fit person who ran, swam and biked hit a roadblock in 2000 when she was in a near-fatal accident in California. After surgery and hospitalization, she saw recovery and later moved to Lacey. And it’s lucky she did because when a related foot problem developed, Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy in Lacey could “step in” to help.

‘Drop Foot’ Brings Challenges to Penrose Physical Therapy Patient

A former U.S. Air Force captain and pharmaceutical representative, Brown was accustomed to being active and fit, competing in triathlons. Although largely recovered from her accident, Brown more recently experienced “drop foot” where the front of the foot drags when walking. Drop foot is often caused by an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. Brown’s drop foot is a likely side effect of her long-ago accident and surgery, impacting her ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Drop foot can also cause trips and falls. Drop foot made it difficult for Brown to later work in a retail position that required standing all day.

Referred to physical therapy, Brown says the “awesome” Penrose team improved her foot strength and mobility. “They helped me a lot,” she says. She adds that she gladly worked hard with the Penrose team to improve her foot. “I’m a crazy athlete,” she says. “I am all about it. I loved it.”

Penrose Physical Therapy’s Effective Foot Exercises Restore Patient’s Health

Brown says physical therapy exercises are important to restore health. “It’s not about winning your race, it’s about winning your life,” she says. She says her heel raises, toe raises, squats and other exercises strengthened her foot and made it more flexible.

Brown had twice weekly appointments with Penrose staff and exercised at home. While her physical therapy continues, Brown is already seeing impressive results. Today, Brown walks her dog Hollywood two to three miles each day. As a bonus, her foot exercises also improved her overall health. “I got in really good shape, as a side effect,” she says.
