The Olympia & Beyond Sports Commission, a division of Experience Olympia & Beyond, celebrated local athletes, coaches, and sports figures at the 2024 Thurston County Sports Awards on November 7 at South Puget Sound Community College, recognizing 28 individuals across six categories for their dedication and impact in the Thurston County sports community.
Sports Award Categories and Winners
Collegiate Sports Star of the Year – Men’s Sports:
Kai Johnson, University of Montana – An Olympia High School alum, Kai stands out for his scoring ability in basketball and dedication to community service.
Collegiate Sports Star of the Year – Women’s Sports:
Nizhoni Tallman, The Evergreen State College – Known for her resilience, Tallman earned All-American honors in wrestling.
High School Sports Star of the Year – Boys’ Sports:
Dylan Stevens, Tumwater High School – Excelling in football and soccer, Dylan also maintains a 4.0 GPA, demonstrating leadership both on and off the field.
High School Sports Star of the Year – Girls’ Sports:
Samantha Blank, Yelm High School – A top athlete in multiple sports, Samantha is also her class president, embodying leadership and dedication in her school and community.
Sports Moment of the Year:
Yelm High School Powerlifting Team – In their debut season, Yelm’s team captured the Men’s State Title with record-breaking performances, marking a historic achievement for the school.
Thurston County Sports Legend Award:
Brad Hooper – With over 30 years of coaching and serving the community, Hooper’s impact on Thurston County athletics is undeniable.
