Registration is now open for the 2023 Expanding Your Horizons Conference, a one-day conference geared towards introducing female-identified and non-binary middle schoolers to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). This year’s conference will be held on Saturday, May 20, on the Olympia campus of South Puget Sound Community College.

Conference attendees will spend their day participating in three hands-on workshops taught by female-identified and non-binary professionals in a wide variety of STEAM fields. This year’s conference includes 17 workshops to choose from and workshop topics include aerodynamics, finance, microbiology, construction modeling, shellfish farming, marine biology and more.

“It is common knowledge that women have long been underrepresented in most STEAM professions,” said conference chair Katya Miltimore. “We don’t expect that participants will walk away knowing what they want their career to be, but we expect that they will be excited about the possibilities and will see the benefit of sticking with advanced math and science classes when they head to high school.”

Registration can be done online at the Expanding Your Horizons Thurston County website and the cost is $15 per student (scholarships are available upon request). All students must be current sixth – eighth graders (in any school district).

This is the 33rd year of the conference, but the first in-person since 2019.
