Cancer touches nearly every life in some way. The American Cancer Society reports that in 2022 alone, 1.9 million new cases will be diagnosed in the United States and over 42,500 in Washington State. Locally, the Olympia Country and Golf Club (Olympia Golf) rallied members and guests at their Drive Out Cancer Golf Classic – which took place on September 10, 2022 – to raise money for groundbreaking research in partnership with the tireless Olympia Hutch Guild. This year, the event will take place August 26, 2023.
Olympia Golf and Country Club Partners with Olympia Hutch Guild for Cancer Research
When tackling a new challenge, it always helps to have a pro on your side. In this case, a literal golf pro. For the inaugural Drive Out Cancer Golf Classic, Olympia Golf’s activities committee members started with the idea of a cancer research fundraiser and ran with it…straight to the back nine. The resulting tournament came about through serendipity as some Olympia Golf and Country Club members are also active with the nearby Olympia Hutch Guild.
The Guild, a registered nonprofit, organizes fundraisers for Seattle’s world renowned Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Their dedicated Curestarters helped facilitate the Classic, which was an all-day event of golf, delicious dining, raffle prizes and a cocktail reception overlooking the Club’s gorgeous waterfront and peekaboo mountain views.
“We plan for this to be an annual event,” says Olympia Golf General Manager Jason Reehm. “The date for this year is August 26, 2023.” So mark your calendars and start putting your team together now.
Golfing in Olympia for a Good Cause
Reehm says that nearly 100 golfers and two dozen volunteers made the event a great success. “Coming together as a group is important,” says Reehm, “the power of people volunteering to make our community better creates a positive energy that impacts the charity but also creates a stronger community. The day of our event there was a clear sense of purpose for supporting cancer research and focusing on the friends and family who have been touched by this disease.”
Thanks to Olympia Golf’s on-site event spaces, which can accommodate up to 250 people, they host many charitable organizations, fundraisers, banquets, get-togethers and groups. Their catering staff offer a full menu of options for fancy, casual or anything in between. They’ll handle everything from tables and chairs to silverware, dishes, clean-up, food and beverages. The events team works with you every step of the way to make sure the end result is perfect for both your guests and your organization.
