Home shows are a great place to find everything you need for under your roof, under one roof. This year’s 2023 Nisqually Valley Home & Garden Show takes place on Saturday, April 29 at Yelm High School and is totally free to attend. There you can mingle with more than 40 vendors, local small business owners, attend educational workshops, eat a tasty lunch, and even get your vintage car buzz at the afternoon’s on-site car show. Rain or shine, that’s a great way to spend the weekend.

Whether home, apartment, duplex, townhouse or ADU, odds are you have a springtime honey-do list. Being stuck indoors all winter means plenty of time to notice which walls need to be painted, appliances to be replaced or extensions designed. Sponsored by the Yelm Chamber of Commerce, the event is “a very unique opportunity to support local businesses and engage with others in the community,” says Chamber Executive Director Amanda Munoz. “Thousands typically visit the event, drawn by workshops, vendors and educational presentations.”

From 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. there will also be a garden swap in the event parking lot. People fill their vehicles with plants, seeds, cuttings/clippings, tools, or whatever gardening-related things they want to share then find a parking spot and place the items on the pavement behind their vehicle. Then the plant swap begins! When the swap is over, you can put the leftover items back in their car, sweep up any dirt spills that may have occurred, then leave with all your free goodies to put into your yard/garden!

This year’s show will also be joined by a vintage car display in partnership with the Prairie Street Rod Association and sponsored by Graham Auto Repair. Fun and educational Home Show workshops are still being developed but check often so you can register and reserve your spot once details go live.

Bringing Together Local Vendors and Small Business Leaders

Munoz gives a shout-out to key event sponsors like Realty One Group Bold, Graham Auto Repair, and DZines Creative Solutions & Graphic Designs. Want to sign up and join their ranks in 2024? There are sponsorship opportunities at multiple levels and questions can be directed to Munoz at director@yelmchamber.com or submitted through the website.

Shopping on the exhibitor side, you’ll find an array of products, services, providers, designers and so much more. There’s a full list posted to the show’s website and organizers are spotlighting individuals through the event’s Facebook page. Regular Meet the Vendors posts easily link guests directly to each company’s social media. This makes it easier to learn about their talents and narrow down your search before the actual day. On Facebook you can also share the event with friends and family for carpooling. To really catch their eye, send the comprehensive walk through video for a whole day’s fun condensed into 98 fast-paced seconds.

Home Maintenance Checklist + Skilled Professionals = Home Show Success

Many of us wait until something is broken before we step in. But when it comes to our house, that can mean a larger project with much higher cost. Instead, routine preventive maintenance extends the life of our home’s systems and avoids catastrophic issues down the road when time and money are tight.

Before heading to the Nisqually Valley Home & Garden Show, consider downloading a home maintenance checklist. This is an easy way to keep track of systems which may not be obvious or easily monitored. Doing a little bit each month—or scheduling a home show pro in advance—spreads out the work and costs of home ownership. Indoors and out, from the attic to the basement, proper planning is always a good idea. So put the Home Show on your calendar today and finish your chores before summer’s long days and party nights arrive.
