Spend the day listening to local middle and high school jazz bands as they play on the mainstage at the Washington Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on November 19. The bands will not only be getting experience playing on the big stage for an audience, but it’s an adjudicated music event, meaning they will be evaluated by a professional and receive feedback on their performances. This year, Dr. David Deacon-Joyner, professor and director of Jazz Studies at Pacific Lutheran University, will be providing feedback to the young musicians. He has helped compose or arrange music for symphony and jazz bands around the U.S.

It’s free to come to the Washington Center during the day and listen to the music! Not only is it a wonderful opportunity for the youth, but for the community as well to literally hear what the Cool Jazz Clean Water event has helped to create over the past 21 years, since the first concert in 2001. 40% of the proceeds from the evening events has funded over 500 new or refurbished musical instruments to local school districts.

If you’ve ever attended any of the past evening performance events, you can literally listen to the difference you’ve made to youth in our community!

Then, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., adults are welcomed back to the Washington Center for an evening of wine, micro brews and spirits, with entertainment by Dr. David Deacon-Joyner, who has performed around the world, and his jazz band.

The tickets are $50, and give so much more than a night of incredible entertainment to you, it gives clean water to those who need it most around the world. In fact, 40% of the night’s proceeds goes to help Rotary Club water projects in Africa, Mexico and South America.

The remaining 20% supports youth leadership and support programs in Thurston County, such as Camp Hope and the Youth Summit. Over the past 20 years, this amounts to over $500,000 in cash donations, and water and sanitation projects that several hundred thousand people have benefitted from, in addition to the over 500 donated musical instruments.

The evening will also have a Recognition Reception, where the Rotary Clubs will honor several volunteers that demonstrate the Rotary motto of, “service above self,” on the projects funded by Cool Jazz Clean Water.

You can purchase a ticket voucher from any Thurston County Rotarian for $50. Vouchers can then be exchanged for tickets at the Washington Center. Or, purchase your tickets directly through the Washington Center for the Performing arts website.

It’s a night of good drinks and uplifting music. It’s also a way to have your money do some good, locally and internationally. So, check out the newly remodeled Washington Center, listen to what your money can accomplish with the middle and high school bands during the day, and then return for an evening that will make a difference long after the last note fades.
