According to a recent Gallup Report, more than half of Americans invest monies in the stock market, but taking that first step can feel intimidating. Where to start, how much to set aside and level-headed guidance through the inevitable ups and downs are best explained with the help of a knowledgeable professional. Jason Andrew, Financial Advisor with OFS Financial Services located at OlyFed believes in trust, transparency and integrity from day – and dollar – number one.

OFS Financial Services started in 2015, in tandem with the hiring of Financial Advisor Jason Andrew. Before starting with their team, he’d worked locally at Thrivent Financial Services since 2006. He loves helping experienced investors or nervous first-timers find the right solution and a calm outlook on today’s turbulent market.

Investing through OFS Financial Services typically follows a six-part plan. First, you’ll establish your core values and financial goals, then gather current financial information and details. With Andrew’s help, you’ll analyze that information to create a personalized financial plan, complete with his advice on investment and tax strategies. Once that plan has been implemented, he’ll regularly review progress and make adjustments as needed.

“The minimum for most investments is $1,000 for a one-time purchase,” says Andrew, “But we recommend $50 to $100 a month. We can set it up as an out of sight, out of mind ACH or direct withdrawal, almost like a bill you pay to yourself.”

During complex financial times, when the market is volatile and inflation feels never-ending, he recommends this system of dollar cost averaging, or automatic withdrawals, because it evens out the ride. “If I’ve got $500, that money is going into an investment on the fifth of every month, no matter what the price point.”

However you choose to fund your investments, the OlyFed team is happy to work with you each step of the way. “While much of investing and financial planning is focused on the future, one of the most important things I do is help my clients achieve clarity in their values and goals,” says Andrew. “Once we know what matters, we can build the strategies to take on your greatest pursuits. It’s part art and part science; however, it all centers on caring for people and the things that matter most to them.”

His professional experience truly comes into play when stock market graphs start to resemble theme park roller coaster rides. One thing Andrew carefully determines is: “Emotionally, how ready is that person to buy when the market is low but could continue to drop? The market almost always levels out and improves so the idea of being able to purchase when things are down through dollar cost averaging* really helps.”

Are you someone who likes to get involved researching the latest, greatest ideas? Prefer simple, quarterly updates? Or want to put entire process in the hands of an expert professional until monies are needed? No problem, Andrew is flexible to meet your needs. “We try to be an idea facilitator to provide a complete investment picture that is easy for client to understand; however, we let them make the decisions that are best for them. It doesn’t do either of us any good if the client is not confident and comfortable with their decisions,” Andrew said.

Generally speaking, Andrew says investing usually works best – and most profitably – on a longer-term basis. Andrew suggests a minimum of three years for ideal results to generally take shape. He’ll factor into account your risk tolerance, liquidity, timeframe and goals before suggesting investment types that make the most sense. Holding money for shorter than three years is better done via one of OlyFed’s personal banking services.

You don’t have to be an OlyFed customer to use OFS Financial Services; however, the organization’s 116+ year history in our region means, “We’re here for you and here for good,” says Andrew. “It can be scary when you don’t know so you should always work with an advisor you trust.” He encourages potential investors to schedule a no-obligation consultation to discuss your financial future. “The earlier we start, the better,” he says. The sooner you start, the more opportunity you have to earn money for college savings, retirement, estate planning, long-term care, starting a business or just planning for that inevitable rainy day, but it takes time for your plans to take root and your investments to begin working for you, Andrew shared.

Meeting with a financial advisor for the first time can be intimidating, agrees Andrew. “People worry about asking silly questions but if you don’t know the answers it’s definitely not silly.” He’s happy to work with everyone, from DIYers to those who want to be involved as little as possible.  “We let the client dictate the kind of relationship we’ll have and what’s going to work best in terms of them reaching their goals and objectives,” Andrew adds.
