“We’re blowing out all the stops when it comes to beer releases for our anniversary,” Head Brewer Stacey O’Connor says. “We will have new releases of our 4th Anniversary SMASH beer; our Winter Lager, a yearly seasonal lager that has a big body and big flavor to match the cold winters here in the PNW; and a ProAM Chinook India Pale Lager. We will also have limited amounts of some of our fan favorites back on tap for just this event such as our Meridian Wheat Lager, Women’s Work IPL, and last year’s SMASH and Winter Lager.”

O’Connor explains that SMASH stands for single malt and single hop. “This beer was made with all Munich malt and all Amarillo hops giving it a rich, bread taste and some fresh citrus hop flavor,” she says. ProAM, on the other hand, stands for professional-amateur. “Our local homebrew club, the South Sound Suds Society, hosts an in-club competition every year and the winner gets to brew their beer on a large scale at Headless Mumby,” she adds. “This year’s winners Lindsay and Ken Reister brewed a delicious IPL with all Chinook hops.”

Starting a new business is never easy. And then the pandemic hit. “The last four years have definitely been interesting,” says O’Connor. “I think a happy surprise was finding our community here in West Olympia. Our goal from the start was to be a friendly, neighborhood gathering place and our West Olympia community has really embraced that. We have built such strong ties with our customers and our neighbors that it was really their love and support that got us through the pandemic and these last four years.”

Their brewery and taproom welcome families – even providing sanitized toys for the little ones – and picnics of outside food to turn your visit into a night on the town. This come one, come all spirit crosses over into Sunday Family Game Night, bring your own or use theirs, and Tuesday’s Drafty Dialog, an open setting for communication, discussion, and jerk-free interaction. Wednesday night is Brewhouse Bingo followed by Thursday Night Trivia, both starting at 5:30 p.m. and free to attend.

Kick the weekend off with something a little different. Friday Cask Tapping happens each week at 4 p.m. when they tap a lager that’s been aging in a cask for a few weeks with special added ingredients. “No-one has any idea what they taste like until they’re tapped, they are each completely unique and very limited, come get some for yourself,” says O’Connor.

Birthdays and anniversaries are a great time to celebrate, but an even better chance to reminisce, take stock and plan for the future – even if it’s just planning more parties. At Headless Mumby, O’Connor says that behind the scenes they’re working hard to grow into their space and keep providing the community with award winning lager beer. “Our plans for the next four years involve more canned products, stretching our distribution and building on our brands to stretch the idea of what lagers can be,” she adds.

Beer novices may wonder why the lager-centric focus. Lagers are the most popular beer in the world, according to industry analysts, but IPA’s and their kin top the craft beer market. “When people hear we are an all-lager brewing company their expectations usually drop,” says O’Connor. “Many breweries are hosting lots of big juicy IPAs, or sweet cake-like sours. Those beers are great, but we want everyone to know that just because we make all lagers doesn’t mean we don’t have a wide variety. Some of our lagers are rich and malty, some are hoppy and delicious. There is something for everyone at Headless Mumby.”
