Whether you want to travel the world without getting out of your pjs, or get a taste of global flavors without leaving our county, the Lacey Cultural Celebration presented by TwinStar Credit Union is your destination! The festival celebrates inclusivity while highlighting our unique cultures and heritages through dance, art, music, food and stories. This year, the Lacey Cultural Celebration will happen in person and online, starting March 12, 2022.

“The beautiful thing about the Cultural Celebration is our community coming together and sharing our culture, customs, and heritage while celebrating our differences and finding out how much we have in common,” shares Jeannette Sieler, recreation supervisor for the City of Lacey.

Come in person to Saint Martin’s University Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to share in the wonderful heritages of your neighbors! Fill your belly with the aromatic flavors of Korean, Filipino, or Chinese food. Vendors like ASHHO, with Bangladesh cuisine, Eggroll Hut, Cebu, and Bulgogi Hustle are ready to take your taste buds around the world. Just be sure to save room for some good old-fashioned American fried, fair food too. “My favorite thing about this event, in addition to the colorful performances is all the great food vendors,” shares Sieler, “and ‘eating my way around the world’ throughout the day!”

Nothing highlights a culture better than their music and dance. Learn the rhythm of each culture as you marvel at these incredibly talented groups, including the River Ridge High School Taiko Drum, Haley Prendergast School of Irish Dance, Khalsa School of Olympia India/Punjab dance, Alaska Kuteeyaa Dancers, Mas Uda Dancers, Troupe Rashaad, Olympia Highlanders Bagpipes & Drum Corps and more.

The event also has vendors with handmade and cultural items for you to purchase, informational booths where you can learn more about your neighbors’ heritages and kids can take part in activities. “We are excited to bring back the popular PASSPORT EMBASSY,” shares Sieler. “Kids can pick up a free passport booklet and ‘travel the world’ by visiting the various booths at the event and collecting stamps. Once they’re done, they can show their passport to get a free prize sponsored by Lacey Collision.”

If you would like to participate in the Lacey Cultural Celebration, they are still accepting applications through February 28. You can apply online on the City of Lacey website.

Travel the Word, Virtually!

From March 12 through April 11, The Lacey Cultural Celebration will also be available online. Performances will be streamed on the event website so you can sample the world’s cultures in the comfort of your own home! Online visitors can shop the vendors and learn about the different heritages and cultures through the virtual information booths. There will also be cooking demonstrations and other presentations on demand throughout the Celebration!

Whether you attend in person, virtually, or both, the Lacey Cultural Celebration is a must-do for the whole family. Celebrate what makes us unique while becoming closer as a community.
