North Thurston Public Schools is proud to follow the principles of the International Charter for Compassion, which recognizes that “we treat each other with kindness, respect differences and make our district a place where everyone belongs and feels safe.”

To help celebrate these principles, NTPS partners each year with the City of Lacey and Lacey South Sound Chamber on a select Compassionate Community Project.

“For so long during the pandemic, it was hard to volunteer safely. This year we wanted to provide a way for people to celebrate acts of service with the larger community through social media,” said Courtney Schrieve, Exec. Director of Public Relations for North Thurston Public Schools.

Past projects have included 100,000 Acts of Compassion and raising $65,000 for the Lacey Food Pantry. This year’s Compassion Project is titled “The Spirit of Giving Back,” with a focus on volunteering.

“This project is a perfect fit this year; it’s so important to highlight ways our community gives back and supports each other,” said Jenny Bauersfeld, City of Lacey Community Relations Specialist. “City of Lacey employees are eager to get involved and will participate in several projects throughout the year.”

The campaign will spotlight the many ways students, community groups, employees, individuals, businesses, clubs, and organizations are giving back to our community.

“So many of our Chamber members and local businesses are involved in giving back to our community, so this year’s Compassion Project will showcase their efforts and hopefully encourage others to give back where and how they can,” said Blake Knoblauch, Executive Director of Lacey South Sound Chamber & Visitors Center.

Here is how you or your group can participate:

  1. Pick up a “Spirit of Giving Back” banner before your event at:
  • NTPS District Office (305 College Street NE) Each NTPS school will also have their own banner.
  • City of Lacey (420 College Street SE)
  • The Lacey South Sound Chamber Office (3925 8th Avenue SE Ste C)
  1. Send a selfie/photo of you/your group holding the banner and a short description of your project to publicaffairs@ci.lacey.wa.us so we can post them on our Compassionate Community Facebook page for everyone to see (please return banners when done).
  2. If you can’t pick up a banner, send us your service/volunteering photos anyway!
