Westport Winery earned its 24th platinum medal at the recent Wine Press NW Platinum Invitational Wine Competition. This ranks Westport as the ninth highest platinum medal winner in the history of the competition which has been held annually for over two decades.

The 2017 vintage of MV Endeavor Cabernet Sauvignon from Elephant Mountain Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, was awarded this honor. Wine Press NW’s Eric Degerman wrote, “Last year, the Roberts family released a single barrel of Cab that was a blend of Klipsun Vineyard on Red Mountain and Elephant Mountain Vineyard atop the Rattlesnake Hills. Critics praised the effort. For this release, they devoted a single barrel to Joe Hattrup’s Elephant Mountain. The results are equally impressive. Here’s a theme of black cherry, blackberry and baking spice. Chocolaty tannins round out a finish that you won’t soon forget.” Unfortunately, because this was such a small production volume and because of its popularity, this wine is sold out.

Fortunately, its younger sibling, the winery’s 2018 Kraken, earned a gold medal at this competition. As noted, this release was crafted from grapes harvested at Elephant Mountain and Klipsun Vineyards. The label features original art by winery co-founder Kim Roberts. A portion of the proceeds from this label benefits the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority. The octopus sculpture commemorating this wine, designed by McCleary metal artist Tyler Hansen, is located atop the entry arch above the winery’s driveway. The best news is that this award-winning vintage is currently available in the tasting room or on the winery’s website at www.westportwinery.com.
