The Evergreen State College has tied with California Polytechnic State University as the most innovative regional university in the western U.S., according to the 2021 U.S. News and World Report “Best Colleges” rankings, released earlier this week.

Evergreen also landed as #6 in building effective learning communities and #9 in best undergraduate teaching.

The latest edition of this report assesses 1,452 bachelor’s degree-granting institutions across the country on 17 measures of academic quality. The “Regional Universities West” category compares 127 schools.

“At Evergreen, we didn’t wait for a pandemic to rethink the college experience,” said President George Bridges. “Our college, with innovation in its DNA, was built for times like these.”

Known for its flexible curriculum and affordability, Evergreen recently inaugurated “Paths of Study” for students looking for more direction toward their academic goals. The college is also developing programs for certifications and credentials to help students meet specific career goals.

In their 2020 rankings, the prestigious Washington Monthly named Evergreen the second-best masters’ granting university in the entire U.S. because of the college’s contribution to the national public good in three vital categories: social mobility, research and promoting public service.
