South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) will celebrate more than 1,400 graduates at the 2020 commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 20, at 10:00 a.m. in a virtual ceremony.
For its 55th commencement ceremony, the college will award 1,498 associate degrees and certificates to the 2020 graduating class. Additionally, the college will award 308 GED® awards, totaling 2,008 awards. Standing out in academic success this year are the 970 graduates earning transfer associate degrees. With an average GPA 3.30, this group of transfer degree students may enter a Washington State public university as a junior.
The virtual ceremony will commence with messages from SPSCC’s president, Board of Trustees chair, and faculty speaker, followed by the student speaker and 2020 Outstanding Student awards.
This year’s student speaker, Nickole Rosalez, will speak about determination, the power of not giving up, and how our past doesn’t define who we become in the future. Nickole began her journey at SPSCC in the High School+ program to earn her high school diploma before earning her Associate in Arts degree. She’ll continue her education at Saint Martin’s University, where she plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and get one step closer to her goal of becoming a teacher.
SPSCC’s first ever virtual commencement will present several elements of historic pageantry and traditions of the Middle Ages while graduates and guests attend from the comfort and safety of their homes. Presentations will be made public at 10 a.m. on June 20 via the SPSCC YouTube (youtube.com/spscc) and Facebook (facebook.com/spscc) pages.
