Providence St. Peter Hospital is the largest hospital in Southwest Washington, serving a population of about 500,000, with half living in the greater Olympia/Thurston County area and the rest in four surrounding rural counties. The Sexual Assault Clinic and Child Maltreatment Center of Providence St. Peter Hospital is a collaboration between local service providers, set in a child friendly atmosphere, where victims are treated by the most qualified professionals who understand the effects of trauma.
The Providence St. Peter Sexual Assault Clinic sees about 350 children annually, and about 550 referrals a year, some that the clinic provides either care or information on how to move forward.
“It is better to give a child care in one facility than it is to have the child go to multiple facilities,” said Dr. Joyce Gilbert, Medical Director of the Providence Sexual Assault Clinic and Child Maltreatment Center.

The Sexual Assault Clinic and partners with the Monarch Children’s Justice & Advocacy Center provide support to those who call in. For example, child protection services or law enforcement will call in with a concern and gather the data and information provided, then the clinic does more investigation on the given situations before seeing the patient. Providence’s Sexual Assault Clinic is backed by a team of trained professionals who know how to work with victims of all ages; medical providers, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, and medical social workers to provide beginning to end support services to caregivers or parents, and children in need.
Dr. Gilbert says the clinic is basically a one stop care facility for children in need, with full support from all types of care giving, “Children were getting scattered care from many areas within their community, we have one area where they come; a very child-friendly environment. One of the things that makes our environment so wonderful, is that we have a facility dog…his name is Astro, and Astro can help in every step of a child’s interactions with us.”
