Capital Medical Center is excited to announce installation later this month of a new, state-of-the-art 3D mammography machine that will provide improved patient comfort and superior diagnostic accuracy in an effort to contribute to the breast health of our community.

The installation is scheduled to begin December 27 and be available and open to patients starting on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the Capital Mammography Center (3920 Capital Mall Dr. SW, Ste. 401).

During the installation downtime, breast ultrasound and bone density offerings at the Center will be unaffected.

The new machine is the only FDA-approved 3D mammography machine that delivers at the same low dose as current 2D full-field digital mammography, resulting in an exceptionally sharp and detailed picture for breast cancer detection and diagnosis.

It also features elements made to be inviting and more comfortable than 2D traditional machines.

“This machine was designed by women for women,” notes Mardi Folsom, Lead Mammography/Ultrasonographer, Capital Mammography at Capital Medical Center.
“It’s designed to pick up smaller cancers more efficiently that can lead to better health for our mothers, daughters and sisters.”

3D mammography exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also help decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing.

Traditional 2D mammography may feature overlapping tissue – which is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 3D method of imaging can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.

This installation is part of Capital Medical Center’s continuing commitment to superior breast cancer detection and has the potential to increase screening volume and compliance for the countless women who have reported avoiding regular mammograms due in large part to the fear of discomfort associated with breast compression.

Folsom reminds that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

“Early detection is huge,” Folsom adds. “Mammograms are a critical part of maintaining a healthy life, to detect cancers in the breast at an early stage when it’s easier to treat.

“We are all on this journey together to tackle breast cancer,” she says. “We are in it for ourselves, our friends, our sisters, moms, daughters and our future.”
