8 Arms Bakery in Olympia will be hosting the first ever Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Contest on June 9 at their Tumwater location to coincide with Triceratops Brewing’s one-year anniversary event. 8 Arms and Triceratop are both located at the historic Tumwater Warehouse District located near the Olympia Airport, off of Old Highway 99.

Throughout the week of June 5-8 people can come into 8 Arms to try different variations of the classic cookie crafted up by the 8 Arms bakers and vote for their favorites. Then on Saturday June 9, community member participants can enter the cookie baking contest with their own version of a chocolate chip cookie. The contest will have three categories of entries: kids 12 and under, teens 13-17 and

adults 18 and over.

8 Arms owner Jen Ownbey says this is the first time her bakery has ever held a contest like this and that the idea is to come up with a new chocolate chip cookie selected by the community.

Contest rules require all cookies to have chocolate chips in them, but other than that, Ownbey encourages creativity and trying unique ingredients.

“The best chocolate chip cookies are moist and bite sized,” she says. “And I personally love things like nuts in them, but that doesn’t mean a plain old chocolate chip cookie couldn’t be the one that wins.”

Contest participants should bring in at least one dozen bite size cookies for the judging panel to sample. You can drop cookies off on Friday, June 8 or on Saturday before 1:00 p.m. at 8 Arms Bakery. Judging will take place between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. during the event. You do not need to be present to win.

Winners will get the chance to bake their winning recipe at the 8 Arms kitchen in large batches and sell them during a promotional day chosen by the company.

8 Arms Bakery was created in 2007 by Ownbey, a former school teacher. According to their website, all recipes are created in house using only the highest quality ingredients and are about 70 percent organic. The community bakery is also featuring a Summer Bakery Share Program, where those who sign up can have a box of baked good delivered to a convenient pick up location each week. The summer session begins on May 31 and goes for 20 weeks.

Rob Horn, owner of Triceratops, will be celebrating his company’s one-year anniversary on the same day from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., next door to 8 Arms Bakery.

The brewery will be releasing a crowd favorite at the event – their Strawberry Golden Ale, along with a canned version of the ale and the Ben Smash IPA. There will be barbecue wings and cold salads provided by Roundbelly Catering for purchase, games for kids, and raffles for Triceratops branded prizes, including two bar mirrors and two skate decks. All proceeds from the raffle will go to support the Olympia Waldorf School.

Triceratops has also started selling two canned versions of their beer, the 10th Chamber IPA and the Pennsyltucky Lager, available at their tasting room located at 8036 River Driver in Tumwater. The canned Pennsyltucky Lager can be purchased at Spuds at Wildwood, Northwest Beerwerks and Old School Pizza.

Horn says the product line at Triceratops is always expanding, including a line of IPAs that change with each chamber brewed. Look for Triceratops on tap at several local establishments in town, including Well 80, Eastside Club Tavern and Skep & Stein.

Horn owns the craft brewery with his wife Kelly and the establishment has quickly become a local favorite.

“It’s been quite a ride,” Horn said. “It’s been full of learning experiences and growth, but we’re mostly thankful for the incredible community support and welcoming we’ve experienced. We’ve been thankful for the local businesses who’ve chosen to support us and are excited to continue that growth.”
