About 500 people are expected to attend the 2018 Medal of Honor and Peace Officers Memorial ceremony — held from noon to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4 — at the Law Enforcement Memorial located near the Temple of Justice overlooking Capitol Lake and the north Capitol Campus.
The ceremony honors law enforcement officers who displayed exceptional meritorious conduct and those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
There will be a 21-gun salute during the ceremony and rehearsal salutes on the west side of the General Administration Building earlier in the day.
The event will cause some impacts to parking, traffic and bus service on the west campus on the day of the ceremony and the night before.
Parking and traffic Impacts
Ceremony set-up begins around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, requiring the closure of the parking lot and short roadway behind the Temple of Justice. The north and south diagonals — the short, one-way drives that run from Capitol Way South towards the Legislative Building — will also be closed the evening of May 3. Both areas will remain closed until after the ceremony – about 3:00 p.m. on May 4.
A short section of 11th Avenue Southwest –- from Capitol Way South to Water Street Southwest, in front of the General Administration Building –- will also be closed. This closure will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, and remains in effect until after the ceremony.
Other May 4 closures related to the ceremony include:
• Cherry Lane Southwest from the flag circle north to Water Street Southwest –- from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
• Water Street Southwest, near the campus greenhouse, to 11th Avenue Southwest –- from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
• The hillside switchback trail below the Law Enforcement Memorial will be closed during the ceremony.
The Dash shuttle will continue to run through the west campus on May 4, but the route will be modified.
