The cheers of the crowd, the excitement emulating as the racers speed by – it’s the beginning of another season at the Grays Harbor Raceway! The gates opened on April 21 at 5:30 p.m. for the first event of 2018. This summer, expect to feel the power of the races featuring sprint cars, modifieds, street stocks and tuners all making a statement to begin the season with a bang.
Bert Johnson is the track manager at Grays Harbor Raceway and can already feel the excitement emulating from the track. “This environment in unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” expresses Bert. As a former driver at Grays Harbor Raceway himself, Bert is always enthusiastically awaiting the beginning of another season. “It’s truly a place for fun for people of all ages. No matter the viewer, there’s a type of race that anyone can get excited to watch.”
The scheduled season at the Grays Harbor Raceway includes various styles of races that will run weekly throughout the year. There are many events that draw in vast crowds, with the stadium seating able to seat upwards of 6,500 fans. One event that’s expected to draw in an enormous crowd is a brand new class taking place on the May 12. This race will feature vintage modifieds – including many pre-WII car bodies – and will be unique during the 2018 season. A few other events that have a great reputation are the Rolling Thunder Big Rigs featuring 1000 horsepower semi-trucks taking place on August 18, the World of Outlaws on September 3 and the ever popular monster truck show, Monster Slam 18’, happening over two days on September 15 -16.
One unique feature of the Grays Harbor Raceway is the friendly approach that the racers often greet their fans after races with. “The racers at the track understand the importance of treating their fans well,” expresses Bert. “The small gestures makes for a really personable atmosphere for fans at the raceway.” Expect to see racers from across WA and the country, as well as some familiar faces from right here in Grays Harbor. With the opening of another season, fans can also anticipate the usual fireworks shows that draw in huge crowds. Mark your calendars for July 7 for the Q Mart Fireworks and Mid-Season Championship night that will serve as a tribute to our nation’s founding, as well as
another fireworks display to end the car racing season on September 8.
It’s important to remember that rainy weather conditions can often cause delays at the raceway, and regrettably can occasionally cause cancellations. “For the most current information and status of our races, please visit our website and like our official Facebook page,” says Steve Beitler, promotions company owner. “We want our fans to stay as informed as possible on the current conditions at Grays Harbor Raceway and plan according for any changes. We’re ecstatic to be bringing another racing season to the Harbor!”
Plan your visit and stay for the weekend at the campsites available at the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds. For all standard weekends the cost is only $20 per space, per night. For the special World of Outlaw weekend it is just $25 per space, per night. It’s a great deal all in one location.
