It’s that time of year when we all dream of a warm vacation. Unfortunately, we can’t all get away somewhere tropical. There is no need to go far to get a feel of the southern sun during our long winter. Spend a night with three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts on February 21 and let their smooth Afro-Caribbean rhythms warm you up as you sway to their upbeat sound.

Hailing from Havana, the seven members of Tiempo Libre were classically trained in Cuba before coming to America to follow their dream. They reunited in Miami and began to make music in their free time (which is “tiempo libre” in Spanish). Since their formation 15 years ago, they have performed on many programs including on Dancing with the Stars, The Tonight Show and on many entertainment programs on Univision and Telemundo. The group has also played live all over the world, including London, Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macao, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, Jakarta and on tours through Australia and the United States.

The first notes will have you feeling that warm sea breeze and smelling coconut. You will find yourself caught up in the mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythms that flow from their instruments and voices. It’s not just a concert, it’s a celebration with joyful music that will lift your spirits as you listen to their exhilarating original songs. The group is on a mission to be ambassadors for the Cuban culture and they fulfill that mission in spades. Through a harmonious blend of their Caribbean music heritage with their American experiences, they transport audiences and infuse their Cuban vibe throughout the night.

Understanding Spanish is not necessary to enjoy the smooth tempos and upbeat jazz harmonies. A musical genre that is all about community, audience members come in as strangers but leave feeling like they are a part of something bigger – an international family. All you need to do is relax and enjoy as they transport you on a mini-staycation right here in Thurston County.

“They will bring a little sunshine to our typically gray February,” says Jill Barnes, executive director at The Washington Center. And, a little sunshine is something we all could use any time of year.

Tiempo Libre will be at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday February 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at just $25 (you can’t fly to Havana for that!) and can be purchased through The Washington Center for the Performing Arts website, by calling the Box Office at 360-753-8586 or in person at 512 Washington St SE, Olympia, WA 98501.
