When a pipe broke in the ceiling at the downtown branch of the South Sound YMCA, water was spraying everywhere, all over the room they call the Bear’s Den, not to mention numerous computers. One of Facilities Manager John Foster’s first calls was to Olympic Plumbing Technology, a company he’d used before and trusted in an emergency. “It was like they were right outside the door,” says Foster. “I was extremely pleased with their response.”

Speed matters at the Y. The age of the building means that if the water is shut down in one area, the entire facility grinds to a halt. With multiple programs and hundreds of members depending on functional utilities, any stoppage has a substantial impact.

Foster knows he can rely on Olympic Plumbing to be expedient.  “I’ve had to call on the spur of the moment on several projects and I know they’ll take care of it right away,” says Foster. “When they come in, I tell them, ‘I’m going to isolate this area and let you have it.’ I’ll walk away, come back twenty minutes later and they’ll have the clog taken care of and everything is clear.”

The admiration is mutual, says Kim Bosler, who co-owns the company with her husband Ron Boeckmann. “We really like and respect John. He’s a military guy and he wants things done when you say you’re going to do them. He and our plumber Travis get along pretty well.”

Although Foster may be in charge of all maintenance activities at work, that is not the case at his home. “It’s sad for me to say, but my wife will not allow me to do any plumbing,” he confesses. “My wife will have me call Olympic Plumbing to replace toilets. I’ll say, ‘Honey, I just replaced a bunch of these at work,’ and she’ll say, ‘I know. You do that at work all day, but this is my home and you are not the chief engineer here.’ We always have a laugh about that.”

Bringing them into his home is no small statement and assuring domestic tranquility helps him do his job better, he maintains. “If things didn’t go well for me at home, they definitely wouldn’t go well for me at work,” he says.

Multiple factors play into the trust he clearly places in OPT. Aside from their rapid response, Foster also appreciates the company’s skill and pricing.

“I’ve never had to call them back on any job they’ve completed,” he says. “And, they’ve always been fair with us in terms of cost.”

Thus far, there haven’t been any plumbing issues at the church where Foster is the head deacon, but that hasn’t stopped him from recommending the company to others. “I’ve always given their names out, especially at my church,” he says. “If we have a problem, they will definitely be the ones who will be coming out.”
