Bringing to a conclusion a distinguished 34 year career serving Thurston County as a general, thoracic and vascular surgeon, Dr. James (Jim) Reus announced his retirement from Surgical Associates.  “It is with a sense of profound poignancy that I announce my retirement from the practice of surgery in Thurston County. Through these many years I’ve had the privilege to be surrounded by wonderful colleagues who have supported me beyond measure. I have had the privilege to raise a family and to grow and live in a most beautiful little corner of the world.”

A graduate of the University of Washington, Dr. Reus tirelessly and compassionately served the surgical needs of the greater Olympia community in which he’s lived for over three decades.  Also serving as the President of the Thurston-Mason County Medical Society, the President of the Foundation at Providence St Peter Hospital, and the President of the Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Reus endeavored to guide and inspire Washington’s healthcare community in the ever-evolving practice of medicine.

“A wonderful mentor of mine…at the University of Washington where I trained in surgery so many years ago, once said to me, ‘Jim, learn the surgical principles because the types of operations you do will change through your career, but the principles behind the operations will not change.’ Nothing could’ve been more true. While operations have evolved, and indeed the entire practice of medicine has undergone profound change, the guiding principles of surgery and medicine which have motivated me throughout my life have not changed.”

Dr. Reus and his wife, Diane, look forward to time on the water cruising the Puget Sound on their live-aboard, the Innisfree, as well as travel and spending time with their grandchildren.  “It is my hope that as Olympia evolves this beautiful little piece of the great Northwest will continue to be a great, great place to live and raise a family, and for those in healthcare to practice their craft for generations to come.”

Coinciding with Dr. Reus’ retirement, Surgical Associates is pleased to welcome two new surgeons to their practice: Dr. Burkley Snow and Dr. Rebecca Freeman.  Both Washington natives, Dr. Snow and Dr. Freeman are very pleased be returning to the Pacific Northwest to serve the surgical needs of Thurston County.
