Sen. Karen Fraser, D-Thurston County, has received the “City Champion” Award from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) in recognition for her distinguished legislative career in service to cities and local governments. Fraser received the award during the October 11 AWC Regional Meeting at Lacey City Hall.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” said Fraser. “Being able to bring my experience as a mayor of Lacey, a city council member and a county commissioner into the Legislature has been invaluable. Our cities and towns play an essential role in our government and help strengthen our communities.”

The City Champion Awards are a part of AWC’s Strong Cities, Great State campaign that brings cities and towns together to achieve greater results and deliver stronger services. This is the third year that AWC has presented the award to select legislators who played key roles in advocating on behalf of issues that are important for the creation of strong communities.

Fraser has dedicated her life to public service. She spent two and a half years as a Lacey City Council member, five years as the mayor of Lacey, eight years as a Thurston County commissioner, four years as a state representative, and the last 24 years as a state senator. Fraser will be retiring at the end of her Senate term in 2017.

The AWC serves its members through advocacy, education and services. Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, non-profit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington’s cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies.
