At an evening gala held in Tacoma’s LeMay Museum on May 25, South Sound Magazine announced the winners of their 2016 Best of South Sound competition. Westport Winery Garden Resort swept the evening, winning Best Boutique Winery, Best Winery, and Best Wine Shop.

Winery co-founder Kim Roberts said, “To be honored in this way means the world to our family and our team. We love the spirit of celebration offered by South Sound in supporting local enterprises.”

Of their secret to success, Blain Roberts said, “Our premise is to find out what our customer wants and then give it to them.” This is how the winery evolved to include a tasting room, the Farm to Fork Restaurant and Bakery, a gift shop featuring gourmet food and an eclectic plant nursery, a dog park, a grape maze and lavender labyrinth, 40 outdoor sculptures by local artists, an event pavilion, 15-acres of display gardens, and a burgeoning 42-acre arboretum.

Westport, which initially opened with 12 wines, has proven itself capable of competing in the prestigious Washington wine industry. Director of Winemaking Dana Roberts said, “We have won over 300 medals in national and international competitions. While it’s an incredible honor to have this recognition from South Sound we also compete on the national stage.”

Looking to the future, the winery’s Chief Financial Officer Carrie Roberts said, “It is our goal to be the Butchart Gardens of Washington.” This is why the business changed its name to Westport Winery Garden Resort in 2015. The concept of developing a world-class destination garden resort is not just about the winery’s success. Kim Roberts said, “Butchart gets a million visitors a year. If we can draw in 10% of that we are really helping our community prosper.”

In addition to their commitment to the community’s future prosperity, the winery donates a portion of the proceeds from each of their wines to different local charities. With 38 award-winning wines and hard ciders, their contributions tally over $300,000 since they opened in 2008.

Westport Winery was named 2011 Washington Winery to Watch by Wine Press Northwest. They have been voted Best Winery by King 5 Evening Magazine for six of the past eight years. They were named the Best Washington Family Business Silver Medal winners in 2012 and received the Grays Harbor Environmental Stewardship Award in 2015.

Westport Winery Garden Resort is located on the corner of Highway 105 and South Arbor Road halfway between Aberdeen and Westport. The winery (including the restaurant, bakery, nursery and gardens) is open daily and offers lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
