In its first 50 years, the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction, and is the only arts funder in the nation to do so.

Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round for fiscal year 2016, including a Challenge America award of $10,000 to The Washington Center for the Performing Arts. The funding serves to provide free and reduced free tickets to underserved populations for: Wellington Ukulele Orchestra, Portland Cello Project, and Kahulanui. Additionally, it supports a Portland Cello Project daytime student matinee and outreaches to four Thurston County Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as a Kahulanui outreach performance in a local elementary school.

The Washington Center offers affordable rates to it’s local artistic partners ensuring smaller, community arts groups have a chance to perform on the mainstage.

The Challenge America category supports projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.
