Salish Seas weavingEvergreen Longhouse & Squaxin Island Tribe Museum will host a family-friendly event featuring Native artists, foods, drums & canoes at Swantown Marina on Jun 27.

Traditional Coast Salish canoes will return to Budd Inlet on Saturday, June 27, for the Salish Sea Native Arts Celebration. The free, all-day event will showcase local and regional Salish artists, Native foods, and drum and dance groups at Port of Olympia’s Swantown Marina.

Historically, Olympia was a site of inter-tribal trading, and trading between Native people and settlers to the area. The Evergreen Longhouse and Squaxin Island Tribe Museum created the Salish Sea Native Arts Celebration in the spirit of that market tradition.

Local and regional Salish artists will feature their work, including weaving and textiles, carving, jewelry and contemporary art. Native foods will be available to purchase and visitors will see drums and dance groups as well the traditional canoes on the waterway.

The Squaxin Island Tribe and The Evergreen State College Longhouse Education and Cultural Center are partners in the National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” 2015 creative placemaking program. The “House of Welcome Longhouse” at Evergreen and the “Home of Sacred Belongings Museum” at the Squaxin Island Tribe are pleased to honor history and celebrate contemporary Native cultures through this unique partnership.
