Port of OlympiaThe Port of Olympia Commission established a process for filling the District #3 Commissioner vacancy at the regular meeting on April 13th. The Commission anticipates filling the vacancy at the June 8 meeting.

The vacancy occurred as the result of former Commissioner Sue Gunn’s resignation on April 1st due to medical reasons.

Appointment Process and Timeline

To qualify for the Commission appointment, a person must be a registered voter and must have been a resident of District #3 for at least one year.

April 15:   Notice of vacancy is published. Port begins accepting applications from qualified persons.
April 29:   Port staff conducts tour of Port for interested applicants.
May 8:     Application period closes at 5:00 p.m.
May 12:   Commissioners receive copies of all candidates’ applications.
May 21:   If needed, Commission holds an executive session to evaluate applicants for interviews.
May 27:   Port publishes list of finalists.

Week of
June 1:    Commission interviews finalists in special Commission meeting.
June 8:    Commission selects qualified person to fill vacant Commission seat in regular meeting.

If the Commission is unable to fill the vacant position within 90 days (June 30, 2015), the Thurston County Commission will be required to appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy.

Vacancies in Port Commission positions are governed by RCW 53.12.140. The statute requires a vacancy to be filled as provided in chapter 41.12 RCW.

Appointed Commissioner Service

The new District 3# Commissioner will begin service upon appointment at the June 8th meeting. The Commissioner will serve until the results of the Nov. 3, 2015 General Election are certified on Nov. 24, 2015.

The Commissioner will be required to file a financial affairs statement (Form F-1) with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission within two weeks of appointment.
