A new $2.7 million federal grant is helping manufacturing businesses across Washington pay for worker training at nearly no cost. The U.S. Department of Labor is funding the training to boost the skills of those who work at small and mid-sized manufacturers in most of Washington’s counties. The grant is part of a larger effort to help manufacturers in our state thrive and grow.

The Make it in Washington initiative is a public-private investment in small and mid-sized manufacturers that uses an integrated approach and a blend of federal, state and private investment. The goal of Make it in Washington is to increase manufacturing capacity, strengthen supply chains, attract investment and create new opportunities for businesses and individuals.

How does it work?

Make it in Washington offers businesses the opportunity to build their manufacturing capacity and improve workforce at the same time. Here’s what it can do:

  1. Advance staff productivity through funded online training
  2. Boost company profitability through strategic consulting
  3. Assist with supply chain challenges to better compete for global customers
  4. Provide a professional business assessment and roadmap for increased returns

“This is an ideal opportunity for small and mid-size manufacturers in Thurston County to enhance and further develop their workforce through quality training that is accessible and promotes efficiencies,” says, Nancie Payne, Ph.D., Workforce Development Director at the Thurston Economic Development Council. “Integrating training that offers degree-granting courses and provides industry recognized credentials promotes greater job satisfaction. A more satisfied employee is likely to stay longer and be more productive adding significantly to the bottom line.”

Short-term classes and degree granting courses are offered through the Make it in Washington Project to provide key employees with industry-recognized credentials that help them advance their careers and build business profitability. The classes are offered through distance programs available at Highline and Shoreline Community Colleges, and Washington State University. All training is online and aimed at helping staff in even the most remote parts of the state acquire needed technology and leadership skills, while boosting productivity and advancing their career potential.

Participating manufacturers will also receive help from manufacturing experts at Impact Washington and the Innovate Washington Foundation to improve operational efficiencies and navigate risks in pursuing new customers, markets, and products.
