As our parents, other family members and friends age, the amount of doctor visits and follow up appointments can increase.  Sometime, the scenario is all too familiar for many unpaid family caregivers:  You know your father had a cardiologist appointment today; you even called to remind him.  On your lunch break, you call him to find out how the appointment went which yields a one word answer – fine.

You know this appointment was important because he suffered a mild heart attack 6 months ago.  He said everything is the same but there is a new prescription confirmed at his local pharmacy and another follow up appointment in two weeks (sooner than usual).  How can you advocate on his behalf or get a clear sense of what is happening when you can’t attend the appointment with him, or worse yet, he’s begun to forget important details relative to his ongoing health?

Attend the Home Instead Senior Care February Family Caregiver Education Series class on Patient & Doctor Communication.  Kelly Cavenah will talk about how to help your parents communicate with their healthcare providers. This program designed for anyone who is an unpaid caregiver or support member caring for an elderly person be it a parent, other relative or friend.

This program is scheduled on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 5:30-6:30PM and RSVP is required.

The information in this program will share why communication is important, discuss the legal healthcare related documents your parents should have, and give you tips for how you loved one can have a good office visit.  There is no cost to attend is the program is specifically designed for the unpaid family caregiver.

Also attending this special presentation to address concerns about the legal documentation required and why these documents are so important, is Judy E. Luther, Attorney with Carlson-Whitley and Luther, LLP.

The Doctor and Patient Communication class is just one of the classes offered by Home Instead Senior Care, serving the greater South Puget Sound region. The monthly family caregiver education series is for unpaid family caregivers and is designed to support their difficult job.   The classes will feature relevant issues such as sibling communication, seniors and nutrition, navigating the senior care maze, and seniors and cognitive issues.  Classes are held on the fourth Wednesday of every month and is just one hour in length, unless otherwise specified.

This is a great way to learn about a variety of topics that will help caregivers navigate the many issues that arise while caring for an older adult. The challenges faced the unpaid family caregiver can bring a sense of loss and depression, but, the agency is hopeful, through these classes, family caregivers supporting loved ones will be able take comfort in the sense of support from their education, experience and service.

You may RSVP by calling Home Instead Senior Care at 360-570-0049 and ask to speak with Bertha Cavenah.
