A portion of Thurston County’s recreational-transportation trail system will be temporarily closed this Saturday.  The closure of the 14.5 mile Yelm-to-Tenino trail is to accommodate the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.  This is the only event that causes the temporary closure of the trail to the general public. The closure allows passage of an estimated 10,000 bike riders over a relatively short period of time.  The trail closes to the public from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM. on July 12 and signs are posted on the trail.

Some Background-

  • The 14.5-mile-long Yelm to Tenino Trail starts at a trail head behind Yelm City Hall at the corner of Hwy 507 and Hwy 510 in Yelm.
  • The trail runs from Yelm, through Rainier, and ends at the Tenino City Park.
  • The trail has been swept, mowed, and otherwise prepped for the event.  Signs announcing the temporary closure have also been posted.
  • The public can view the riders from the trail heads at Yelm, Rainier, and Tenino. There is plenty of room for parking and sitting at picnic tables at all three locations.
  • Tenino City Park will have water stations and other services for bike riders set up adjacent to the parking area in the park.
  • The 202-mile-long Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic started in 1979 with only 1980 off, because of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
