Three local students received trophies and cash awards from Mason County PUD 3 for their electricity-related projects at Skookum Rotary’s March 22, 2014 Mason County Science Fair.

The $50 first place award went to Phoenix Miller (Fourth Grade, Evergreen Elementary School, Shelton) for her project titled “Electric Smarty Pants.” Miller also won “Best of Category” and “Best of Show” in her division.

The $35 second place award went to Grace Renecker (Sixth grade, South Side School, Shelton) for her project titled “Make a Wish with Solar Power.”

The $25 third place award went to Trent Evans (Fifth Grade, Mountain View School, Shelton) for his project titled “Coin Power.”

PUD 3 employees put on a show for students and their parents featuring Professor Energy, Short Circuit Girl, Lineman Bob, and PUD Engineers. The presentation included:

  • What happens during a “power outage,” including a lineman coming to make the area safe and fix the electrical service.
  • Electricity generation.
  • An audience participation game of making a circuit called “WILL IT CONDUCT?”
  • A safety presentation by PUD 3 engineers.

PUD 3’s education committee is pleased to reward outstanding students in Mason County who are committed to learning about the important role that electricity plays in our daily lives. The PUD is especially pleased that Skookum Rotary has taken a leadership role in encouraging local scholars in their scientific pursuits.
