If you are about to embark on a house project, put some expertise in your corner and go visit the folks at Abbey Capitol Floors and Interiors. I have gone through a house remodel before and like most remodeling stories, although it ended well, it was longer, dirtier and we changed our tile choice at least ten times. I’m not sure how our remodel experience stacks up to others, but I do know that the whole experience would have been better if we had someone helping us through the process.

Locally Owned

Blake and Lori Woodland own Abbey Capitol Floors and Interiors located in West Olympia. I had the opportunity to sit down with them in their beautiful showroom. Blake has a long history of helping clients with their flooring needs.  “I was a self employed flooring installer for over 20 years and was looking for an opportunity to leave the installation side.  Negotiations started and we came up with a deal to purchase Capitol Floors and Interiors.  We took over the store in November 2000,” he explains.

Lori, who currently manages the showroom, worked in the dental field for many years before buying the showroom. “I really love the change of environment,” she says.  “Working with customers to choose beautiful products for their homes has been very rewarding.”

“We’ve been in business for 13 years, and this location has been here for 29 years.  Our kids grew up in West Olympia and graduated from Capitol High School.  We were very involved in the kids’ schools and supported the many sports programs that they participated in. We love staying involved in our community,” continues Lori.  Lori is a member of the downtown Olympia Rotary Club and both are members of the Thurston County Chamber and Olympia Master Builders.

Working with Customers

The Abbey Capitol Floors showroom is located on Cooper Point Road.

The showroom is packed with products that include hardwood, tile, natural stone, laminate, carpet, counter tops and window covering treatments.  Surrounded by the mountains of different carpets, I imagine that choosing the right product is pretty intimidating.

Lori and Blake describe how they work with their customers to make sure they are satisfied at the end of the project. “We ask a lot of qualifying questions that determine what their needs are based on their lifestyle,” states Blake.

“Do they have children or pets?  How long are they expecting to be in their home?  There are qualifying questions to guide us. Today’s customers can get so much information from the internet and are much more educated on products then ever before. Our sales team keeps current on all products and has many years of experience combined,” says Lori.

Budgets can drive customer decisions too.  “We have products that can fit every budget – from beautiful wool carpets to in-stock carpets for the property management markets.  We also showcase ‘green’ flooring options from Cork flooring, bamboo, Marmoleum and recycled tile,” explains Lori.

“Coming from the installation side, as a management team we stress the customer service experience.  The customer service aspect is so important to us.  We know we rely upon word of mouth referrals and that has definitely shown up in our repeat customers and our reviews,” says Blake.

“Everyone in our organization has the same mindset and goals in mind for the customer,” he adds.  “From our professional sales team to our scheduling and operations team, the goal is and has always been beating our customers’ expectations.  We are focused on the customer experience before, during and after the installation.”

Hot Trends

Abbey Capitol Floors’ showroom includes a number of hot new products.

With so many materials in the marketplace, Lori describes some of the new products and trends.  “We attend Abbey’s flooring convention every year to buy updated displays and products. New styles of flooring, including luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl plank (LVT and LVP respectively) are really exciting and beautiful. LVP looks like hardwood but is moisture resistant, dent resistant and more sound absorbing.

“Depending on the style you like,” she continues, “we offer all different price ranges and color options.

“Soft carpets are in big demand by consumers. Who doesn’t want to wake up and step on warm soft carpet in the Pacific Northwest?  We showcase Karastan Smartstrand silk carpets, American Showcase Trusoft carpets and Alexander Smith Dupont Smartstrand in a large variety of styling, color and prices,” she added.

Lori and Blake Woodland get the most satisfaction out of working with customers and seeing them satisfied at the end of a project.  If you have any home improvement projects on your list, stop by Abbey Capitol Floor & Interiors for ideas and their expertise.
