Composer Neil Flory will share his thoughts on some of the more than 80 musical compositions he has created in acoustic and electro-acoustic mediums as the next guest in the Saint Martin’s University “Music @ 11” recital series. Flory will also perform a piano improvisation during the event, which will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Kreielsheimer Hall, on the Saint Martin’s University campus, 5000 Abbey Way SE. The event is free and open to the public.
Flory has more than 80 compositions to his credit and his music has been performed across the U.S., as well as in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In addition, Flory’s Benediction of Being had its Pacific Northwest premier in October during a chorale performance at the Saint Martin’s University Sacred Music Concert.
“It is truly a privilege to have our students experience the thoughts and intent of a composer whose piece we performed earlier in the year. We are talking to the primary source of the work,” says Associate Professor of Music Darrell Born, M.M., who chairs the University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts. “Exciting stuff!”
Flory’s music appears on commercially available recordings from the Summit and Emeritus labels, and his cantata, The New People, is featured on a CD/DVD combination package of the same name. It is distributed by the Del Mar College Music Department. His music is currently published by Jomar Press, Cimarron Music Press, and Tuba-Euphonium Press.
Commissions that Flory has fulfilled over the years include a work for Yutaka Kono (unaccompanied tuba), two works for Duo 46 (violin and guitar), a work for the Strung Out Trio (violin, guitar, and piano) and a work for the Iowa Music Teachers’ Association (flute, oboe, guitar, cello, and harpsichord).
In December, Flory will begin a position as assistant professor and music coordinator at Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York. Previously, he served as a member of the music faculties of Central Washington University, Del Mar College and Luther College. He is an active member of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States, and the Society of Composers, Inc.
Born created the “Music @ 11” recital series, now in its ninth year, to raise awareness of the musical arts and provide opportunities for students and the community to experience various kinds of music in a recital setting.
