Shauna James Ahern, the author and photographer behind the award-winning blog GlutenFreeGirl.com and the food memoir, “Gluten-Free Girl”, will discuss her new book, “Gluten Free Girl Every Day,” on Saturday, November 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Tumwater Timberland Library.

Ahern is considered one of the most authoritative voices for gluten-free living on the Internet. “Gluten-Free Girl Every Day” highlights healthy, relatively simple meals to feed your family well. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Shauna James Ahern and Gluten Intolerance

After being ill for many years, Ms. Ahern was diagnosed in 2005 with celiac disease, an illness that afflicts an estimated 1 in 105 Americans, while only 3% have been diagnosed. No cure exists for celiac disease. The only treatment is to eat a gluten-free diet. Already an experienced writer, Ahern started a blog relating her new experiences eating gluten free.

Success of the blog prompted her to write and publish “Gluten-Free Girl: How I Found the Food that Loves Me Back … and How You Can Too” in 2007. The next book, co-written with her husband Daniel Ahern, “Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef: A Love Story with 100 Tempting Recipes,” details their courtship and marriage through evocative and engaging linked stories and recipes. Ahern’s blog can be found here.

Ahern’s blog is full of stories of her life on Vashon Island, Washington with her chef husband and active 5 year old daughter. Part life, part

cooking, and part science tutorial, the blog has captured the attention of readers everywhere and her following is well deserved. The recipes she features include specific instructions for preparation and are tested exhaustively in her Vashon kitchen before being shared with devotees.

With recipes ranging from Strawberry Shortcake and Pies to Macaroni and Cheese and Quiche, the blog not only tempts readers with recipes, but teaches them the basics behind

gluten-free cooking. Scientific explanations of grains and starches as well as measurements in grams all contribute to successful results.

The Gluten Free Girl’s Cookbooks deliver in the same manner as her blog and her experiences as a mother to a toddler and now precocious 5 year old have taught her how to cook “Everyday” for her family.

The presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the Tumwater Timberland Library. The library is located at 7023 New Market Street. For more information, please call (360) 943-7790 or visit www.TRL.org
