It’s that time of year when the lingering cold makes its rounds. I know; mine is still going away. Stuffy noses, raspy coughs and general challenges to the immune system can affect both children and adults.

We might be tempted to find relief at the doctor’s office by getting a prescription for an antibiotic. According to the Center for Disease Control colds, most sore throats and even acute bronchitis, as well as sinus and ear infections are viral and will not be helped by antibiotics. If antibiotics won’t make you feel better, alleviate symptoms or get you through it faster, what can you do? Consider talking with Kate Tossey of Kate’s Herbs. She is a Certified Herbalist who grows, dries and prepares a bouquet of possibilities.

Kate’s Herbs is sold at the Olympia Farmers Market on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Kate’s Herbs can direct you to the remedy to best alleviate your discomforts and support your body to get through its discontent. It’s not just cold and flu symptoms that can be helped, but all sorts of body ‘dis-ease’ can be treated with various herbs and herbal combinations. Most people report regular levels of stress, which taxes the immune system. Our diets and lifestyle can also stress our kidneys, liver and all of our adrenal glands. Maybe you suffer from migraine headaches or have trouble falling asleep. Herbs can help. The curatives have been the foundation of treatment for thousands of years.

Kate’s Herbs has been in business since 2011 and opened a space at the Olympia Farmers Market this season. She is there Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Many of her herbs are grown in her garden in northeast Olympia; the rest from a family farm in Monroe. You can meet Tossey at her stand where you will find help for whatever ails you. The list of curatives begins with Adrenal Support and ends with Women’s Energy Booster – with many choices in between. However, if you don’t find what you want, ask.

Spices for your cooking pot are also sold by Kate’s Herbs.

Tossey’s business also offers custom remedies. Perhaps you have two simultaneous issues – headaches and sleeplessness. She can make one remedy to address both. She believes that nutrition is an important component of overall health. “I want health to be accessible to people.” Tossey affirms that good health does not need to be complicated.  “It’s paying attention to energy levels, cravings and symptoms.”

The supplies are not limited to herbs to make your tincture or tea. She creates salves for chest congestion and one called Sweet Dreams. Gently rub it on your temples before as you go to bed. There are washes for skin treatments and even mosquito repellent and sunscreen. Kate’s Herb’s offers herbs for your cooking pot, too. Stop by and smell them. Tossey teaches classes, such as Edible Weeds, through the Olympia Food Co-Op. You can find Kate’s Herbs at Olympia Local Foods.

Treat yourself to the benefits of optimal health. Plants contain remarkable properties for health and healing. Kate’s Herbs has done the growing, cultivating, picking drying and combining. You do the rest. It’s as easy as making a cup of tea.
