Wednesday night saw two Thurston County volleyball heavyweights match-up in a non-league rendition of a cross-town rivalry.

Tumwater, the runner up in the 2A state tournament a year ago, took their 8-1 record into the Olympia High School gymnasium, where the T-Birds faced off against the 7-2 Bears, who finished fourth in the 4A state tournament in 2012.

Tumwater took the non-league match-up 3-0, posting their ninth consecutive victory after dropping the season opener to 4A Curtis High School of University Place.  Olympia has now dropped three of their past five matches after starting the season 6-0, albeit their trio of losses come against strong opponents in Bellarmine Prep, Gig Harbor and Tumwater.

The Bears travel to Port Orchard to take on South Kitsap on Monday, Oct. 21, while the T-Birds head on the road to face-off against 2A Evergreen Conference foe River Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 17.
