This year’s theme for the county’s annual preparedness event is “Know Us Before You Need Us,” and the staff at Thurston County Emergency Management want to you to get the tools, tips and information from first responders and emergency management experts to get you “StormReady” before fall and winter weather moves in.

Thurston County earned the “StormReady” designation from the National Weather Service, but being storm-ready doesn’t mean that communities are storm proof. While South Sound first responders and Thurston County Emergency Management officials are ready to respond to heavy rain, snow, extreme winds or flooding this winter, each resident should also be prepared to respond to severe winter storms and other natural disasters and emergencies:

  • Do you know the difference between a winter weather advisory, a winter storm watch and a winter storm warning?
  • If your power is out for several hours or days, do you have the supplies and knowledge to stay warm and stay safe?
  • Have you winterized your home and your car, and have you stocked your supply kits for your home and your vehicle?

Get answers to these questions and much more at the annual Emergency Preparedness EXPO.

The free event will open at 10 a.m. at the Saint Martin’s University Marcus Pavilion & Worthington Conference Center, and every attendee will receive a free Kit-Man safety bag that will give you a jumpstart on creating your own emergency response kit. More than 40 vendors will be on hand with information and demonstrations on everything you need to prepare, respond, and recover from the next storm or emergency.
