“You had to know W-I-N-E would be the first letters used on our new Scrabble board,” winery co-owner Blain Roberts said of their latest reason to visit one of the Northwest’s most popular destination wineries. His wife and partner, Kim Roberts, said she stole the idea from a friend. “One of our friends owns a winery in Tri-cities, he’s a real inspiration to us and we’re always comparing notes. When he said he thought it would be cool to have an outdoor Scrabble board I started researching how to make it happen.”
The result is a four-foot-square board, located under the gazebo in the winery’s Color Wheel Garden, is the perfect place and fashion to while away the time with a glass of wine. Of course, the winery also has a full-sized wizard chess set, two putting greens, a grape maze, a petanque court, a musical fence, a lavender labyrinth, and almost thirty outdoor sculptures amidst their world class display gardens. “We study the great gardens of England especially and strive to create the complete destination estate experience for our guests,” said the winery’s general manager and the couple’s daughter, Carrie Roberts.
And what about their son and winemaker Dana Roberts? He’s too busy to comment as he is experiencing the earliest harvest in Washington State history. The word is that this will be an epic year for quality and quantity of grapes and he’s looking forward to sharing the fruits of his labors in the spring.
