Diversity and social justice educator Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., kicks off South Puget Sound Community College’s new Artist and Lecture Series with a “courageous conversation” on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts.
Moore, who has hosted diversity and multicultural workshops around the country, will present “Trayvon Martin, Paula Dean, Riley Cooper and MOORE: A Courageous Conversation about the ‘N’ Word, White Supremacy, and Race in America.” Moore looks to engage attendees in a practical discussion about the current state of race relations in the United States. In addition to his work around the country, Moore also serves as the Director of Diversity at Brooklyn Friends School in Brooklyn, N.Y. This free event takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. on the Mainstage of the Minnaert Center.
The South Puget Sound Community College Artist and Lecture Series brings a diverse group of distinguished scholars, activists and artists under a common theme: “Reflections.” Presenters are recognized nationally or internationally for their work, and aim to initiate courageous and purposeful discussion within the community concerning critical and contemporary issues. Diversity is central to the series. Presenters offer different cultural, political and religious perspectives. This engages students, faculty, staff and the community in the issues of the day, helping deepen understanding and connections as a community. All events are free to students, faculty and staff, and free or at a nominal cost to the public.
In addition to Moore, Mexican-American author Luis Urrea will visit in November. The series returns for the first time since the 2006-07 academic year, and originally began in 1987. This year, the series will look at reflections of our lives and experience, often with a diversity and equity component. For more information about the series visit our website.
