The Grays Harbor Raceway was back in action for a wonderful night of racing on Saturday August 10th at the 3/8-mile clay oval. The event would be the annual Grays Harbor County Fair Race and would feature the Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modifieds, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks, and Hornets.
The #50K Renegade of Kris Asche, from Shelton, would be the chauffer with the early lead in the Shipwreck Beads IMCA Modified feature. Asche would be passed by the Blue Bear Park/Blondie’s Restaurant #26 Shaw of fellow Shelton driver Scott Miller on lap four. Miller would stay out in front until unfortunately he would spin out. After that a great race up front would take place between several drivers.
Hoquiam’s Zack Simpson would eventually get his mount to the front on lap ten. After securing the lead Simpson would have the race won and would go on to win the feature keeping all challengers in check. It would mark his second trip to victory lane for the Jacknut Apparel/C&K Machine/Dave’s Small Engine Repair #12 Shaw.
Kris Asche would end his night in the runner-up position while third was Joe German of Wishkah in his Wishkah Iron Works/Ozman Services Inc./Powertrain Application #75X Skyrocket. Completing the top five finishers were the J&F Automotive/Bayview Ready-Mix/MASCO Petroleum #8 Sidebiter of McCleary’s Jeff Foster in fourth and Scott Miller, recovering from an early race incident, in fifth.
Defending champion Jared Peterson from Stanwood was on a terror once again in the USAC Ford Focus Midget ranks. Peterson, driving the Carla and Gaylon Stewart owned Sno-Lynne Machine #3S XXX, grabbed the early lead and would not give it up. He would however have some fast company behind him including a brief challenge by Garrett Thomas of McCleary late in the feature. Peterson stayed out in front and would earn the triumph which would be his second at GHR in 2013.
Garrett Thomas placed his Olson Landscaping/Martelli Distributing #14 Beast in a respectable second place while third was the Great Western Transport/Elma Lanes #91 Beast of Chase Goetz from Snohomish. Jeremy Miller of Montesano in the MASCO Petroleum #44 Beast crossed the line in fourth and following him was Ariel Biggs from McCleary in the Don Emory owned Jacknut Apparel/ MASCO Petroleum #11E machine in fifth.
The normal top contenders in the Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks would have issues earlier in the night making things quite interesting. Austin Kerrigan, from Aberdeen, rose to the occasion and looked to pick up his first career feature victory. Kerrigan and his #AK47 Mustang was quick all night and would move into the lead on the seventh circuit.
Kerrigan would maintain a lead but cautions would occur bunching the field right up. On each restart the Jacknut Apparel/C&K Machine #9 Camaro of Hoquiam’s Jack Parshall would manage to mount a challenge. The two would go back and forth while contesting for the top spot but each time Kerrigan would prevail. In the end Kerrigan would earn the victory while competing in only his second season.
Jack Parshall would finish second and Austin’s father Shane, also from Aberdeen, would place third in his #43 Mustang. The Custom Fiberglass/Conger Racing #13XXX of Don Briggs Jr. from Wishkah, and also led the first six laps, wound up fourth followed by Tacoma’s Mike Knox in his Sam’s Auto Repair/Desperado Express #40 in fifth.
Willie Wright of Aberdeen would be the big winner in the Hornet division. He would put the Kerrigan and Sons Trucking #17 in victory lane after a hard fought battle with Ocean Shores driver Jeff Daniel in his Pure Clothing/John L. Scott Real Estate/John’s Plumbing #14.
The Grays Harbor Raceway will be back in action next Saturday night on August 17th.
