The Olympia School District has selected Sean Shaughnessy to serve as Principal of Roosevelt Elementary School. The Roosevelt Principal search committee recommended Mr. Shaughnessy unanimously to the Olympia School Board late last week, and the Board approved his hiring Monday evening.

Mr. Shaughnessy has a decade of teaching experience at the elementary and middle-school levels. For the past three years he has served as a special education teacher at McKenny Elementary, where he took on a leadership role and assisted Principal Brendon Chertok with developing the school schedule, setting school goals and supervising students. During the 2013-14 school year, Shaughnessy served as a substitute principal at a number of the district’s schools.

“I am very excited about becoming Roosevelt’s new principal,” said Shaughnessy. “As Olympia is my home, I feel honored and privileged to be a building administrator in the Olympia School District.  I look forward to working collaboratively with staff and community members in preparing our students to become lifelong learners.”

Shaughnessy is a key member of the Olympia School District team charged with implementing the Teacher/Principal Evaluation Project district-wide. He is completing his administrator’s certification program at the University of Washington and will serve this summer as the district’s middle- and high-school summer school principal.

“Sean will be a great fit for the students, families and staff at Roosevelt,” said Olympia School District Superintendent Dick Civitanich. “He has a wide range of experience and knowledge that will serve the community and the district well as he takes on this new role.”

Roosevelt Elementary is located on Olympia’s East Side at 1417 San Francisco Avenue NE. It serves more than 400 students in preschool through fifth grade. Roosevelt students move on to Reeves Middle School and Olympia High School.
Shaughnessy will begin his new position July 1.
